Lisbon highlights

Alfama & Mouraria – Wander Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods, with winding streets, tiled buildings, and scenic viewpoints (miradouros). Stop at Miradouro de Santa Luzia or Portas do Sol for classic views.

Baixa & Chiado – Central Lisbon for shopping, cafés, and easy strolling. Ride the Santa Justa Lift for a quick skyline view.

Belém – History lovers should visit Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower, then stop for a pastel de nata at Pastéis de Belém.

Easy half-day trips from Lisbon

Sintra (40 min by train) – Fairy‑tale palaces nestled in the hills. Visit Palácio da Pena or Quinta da Regaleira if you want something truly unique.

Cascais (30–40 min by train) – A relaxed seaside town with beaches, cafés, and a charming historic center.

Food Tip: Don’t skip seafood—grilled sardines, octopus, and fresh fish are staples. Dinner is usually late (8–9pm).


If you have a couple of days to travel…

Option 1: Lisbon + Porto

Porto (3–3.5 hours by train) – Romantic river views, colorful old town (Ribeira), and famous Douro Valley wine.​

  • Vsit Livraria Lello

  • Cross the river to Vila Nova de Gaia for a port wine tasting












Option 2: Lisbon + Algarve Coast

Algarve (2.5 to 3 hours by train or car) – Golden cliffs and turquoise water. The​ weather is usually beautiful, warm and sunny in late September / early October, and the beaches will be less full.

  • Lagos – Beaches and dramatic cliffs (Praia Dona Ana, Ponta da Piedade)

  • Sagres – Rugged cliffs and a wild Atlantic feel

  • Portimão — Port city with a busy marina and beautiful beaches








Option 3: Lisbon + Alentejo

Alentejo (3 hours by train or car) – Rolling countryside, medieval towns, vineyards, and calm.

  • Évora – Roman temple, historic center (UNESCO site)

  • Comporta or Melides – Chic but understated beach escapes

Practical tips for traveling in Portugal

Getting Around: Trains are reliable and affordable; renting a car is helpful and recommended outside cities.

Language: Portuguese is the official language, but English is widely spoken.

Currency: Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted, but small cash is useful.

Dress Code: Comfortable shoes are essential in Lisbon’s hills!

Safety: Portugal is one of Europe’s safest countries.
